Finished Pieces

Super Fantastic

All is printed and all is well and good in the land of things to do. Am wondering whether to bring in actual sculptural pieces or if the printed piece is better on it own- brings up the question of whether the photograph IS the art piece or is the actual piece (even though thats only half of it) more resonant. Luke liked the actual sculptures whereas I prefer the finished photographs- on one hand they are the finished end piece yet on the other hand I understand why he likes the physical pieces...

On another note, someone buy me this Jan Tschichold notepad. Prefereably someone in the third year whose business cards I have resigned my waking hours to.

Photoshop is great when you have such a long list of things to do that even a nobel-prize winning octopus would give up.

Dirty Graphics

Luke had some interesting ways to continue the project- to revert them back into their original context as typographic layouts by either physically superimposing the corresponding text back onto the actual wood, or by inking the surface up and creating a print from it (although wood would have to be flatter next time). I like the idea of printing from the actual piece.. anything to get graphic designers back into the real world and getting their hands dirty!

It is true what that mr. kierkegaard said in that 'Life can only be understood backwards, yet must be lived forwards' and so in true Kierkegaardian style here are some photos of the pieces being constructed last week. Notice how comfortable they look in their original surroundings as opposed to the studio..

Coalscence Breeds Good Art and Design

I went to see Daniel Brown give a lecture at the Design Museum yesterday as I've been interested in his work for a long time. It blends two seemingly diseparate disciplines (math/programming and art) so beautifully and seamlessly. His lecture and work really underlines the general idea of this project; that creating work that straddles more than one discipline is enhanced and enriched beyond the limitations of one medium.
I truly believe that much work becomes more interesting when either removed of its typical context and placed in another or when it is juxtaposed with something reactionary or coalscent.

I did two sets; the second being very very bright to blow the picture out somewhat so that it resembles a layout more with the edges more visible than the wood grain.
Not sure whether to present both or just the first set..

I like Shooting

Shooting went really well today. Far less painful than I had envisioned. It was strange removing these rough, coarse, splintery things from their similarly shaped habitat outside in Graham's house/junkyard into the clean, measured and precise environment of the studio.
All of a sudden these rough n ready sculptures under the closely-scrutinising eye of the camera and smooth background, changed their character and became less DIY and more of an aesthetic object. The final transition from sculpture-based medium to graphic/photographic-based medium really did add something.

Posterboard must be Abolished without Abandon

Not 100% sure how I want the photos to be presented.. as it needs a reference to the original layout. and i abhor posterboard with a deep, deep hate.
Wonder how much it would be to print a small small book so that it returns to its original arena even more..

Pieces have been built yesterday. Collaboration is interesting in that you can't control what the other person does, or doesn't do. It is as much their piece as yours and from two (or more) people's set modes of seeing and doing, something completely new and organic is formed.
Still slightly annoying when it doesn't fall entirely in line with what you had in mind.. but this is the positive aspect of collaboration, that 'unknown' aspect in play..

So my outcome will hopefully be large, slick photographs of the translation (which furthers it one step further into a re-transformation back into its original form). Only issues left to deal with before construction begins is that a.) my sculptor has to return from holiday and b.) not sure whether to give original source material from one typographer or numerous ones. Have chosen Janny Tschichold as he is, for me, pretty much the precursor to modern typography and layout...
